Stilbaai

Situated on the Goukou River estuary that flows into the warm Indian Ocean, Stilbaai (known affectionately as the Bay of Sleeping Beauty because of its proximity to the Sleeping Beauty Mountain) is one of the most popular resorts in the Hessequa.

Having the advantage of both river and ocean, it offers a diversity of sun-sea-and-sand adventures and has both a small fishing harbour and landing strip for small aircraft. Arts, crafts and home-grown products can be found dotted in and around the town.

Although the popularity of Stilbaai as a favourite holiday destination is booming, the seaside town maintains its characteristics as a pollution-free, peaceful destination.

It is characterised by long stretches of white, sandy beaches, mild weather and a 15 km navigable river.

Jongensfontein, a coastal village 9 km away, offers spectacular ocean views, tidal pools and a popular caravan park. The historic little ‘White House’ (Fonteinhuisie) serves as a local museum and information centre.

At Melkhoutfontein, 7km inland, you will find a friendly community of descendants of the original fishermen who welcome visitors to experience their way of life.

If it’s that elusive wave you’re looking for, look no further than Stilbaai; a favourite among surfers who travel from near and far to chill out on the beach while waiting for the Big One. mail: info@hessequa.net
